A poor, lower-ranking police officer guards a prison block containing one of the officials who held office during the administration of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2012 in Egypt. While initially the officer mistreats the prisoner, with time the two characters start talking and eventually bond. The officer’s child is sick, but due to his poverty and nepotism in the police apparatus, he ends up resorting to the prisoner’s connections to treat his son, leading their relationship to deepen.
Most of the film takes place inside the prison, and it does a good job in visually portraying what cells look like and how prisoners eat and drink. It also shows how the officer is weak and is treated like any underprivileged Egyptian once he takes off his military uniform. Additionally, prison is the place where his consciousness changes, which causes him to communicate on a human level with the prisoners.
Produced by one of the top channels that act as a mouthpiece for the Muslim Brotherhood, the protagonist presents arguments that are often propagated by the Islamist group and its affiliated media outlets. The film also features two actors that fled Egypt fearing persecution and are currently vocal opponents of the regime and its policies. While set in Egypt, the film was shot in Turkish detention centers, under the permission of Turkish authorities.
